![]() ![]() The OP hit upon a topic that many of us enjoy and appreciate, and even though our preference in books might vary, that is what makes it interesting. I am impressed by the lists of books read by participants in this thread. No surprise, many of those trains are no longer in service. I related well to the book because I have been on almost all the trains that he wrote about in the book plus a few more. Regarding Paul Theroux, I liked "The Old Patagonian Express - by train through the Americas", 1979. Dayton Duncan later collaborated with Ken Burns in writing and providing commentary for the PBS series on Lewis and Clark, as well as some other Ken Burns works. He also developed a humorous set of "rules of the road" based on his way of living on the road. He wrote about the people and places along the way, and compared notes with the original journals of Lewis and Clark at the same locations. He followed the present day roads in a VW bus along the original route of the Lewis and Clark trail. Not exactly a novel but a 1980s story called Out West by Dayton Duncan. ![]()
